FAQs
What is Perinatal Psychiatry?╲╱
Also called Reproductive Psychiatry, Perinatal Psychiatry is a specialized area of practice that focuses on the mental health and well being of people through reproductive transitions.
This includes the process of conception, during pregnancy, and the postpartum period. Additionally it focuses on infertility, perinatal loss, premenstrual disorders, and perimenopause.
Patients can be seen long term, not just through these transitions.
After Psychiatry residency I received further training in Women’s Mental Health and Perinatal Psychiatry through a specialized fellowship at the University of Washington, and am certified through Postpartum Support International.
I already have a therapist, can I still see you for medication management?╲╱
Yes! That is wonderful that you have a therapist that you’re working with. Having a positive therapy relationship is integral to your wellness treatment plan.
Do I need to be taking medications to work with you?╲╱
No. Using medications is a complex decision and not every patient needs or will benefit from medication. I can help discuss the risks of taking or not taking medications, as well as in depth discussions regarding medication use during conception, pregnancy, and breast/chest feeding. I strongly believe in providing the most evidence based, up to date information to assist you in making decisions regarding medication.
Do you take my insurance?╲╱
My goal is to provide you with personalized care and at this time I do not work directly with insurance providers. Patients pay me directly, and I give you a bill that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits. Because I used to see patients at the University of Washington my name may be on some insurance panels. However, this website is for my private practice in which I provide all aspects of treatment directly with you and therefore is not part of the insurance panel. I accept credit cards, checks or cash. Payment is due at the time of service.I encourage all patients to contact their insurance company to determine the amount you will pay for out-of-network services prior to our visit.
What questions should I ask my insurance?╲╱
- How do I submit a claim for out-of-network reimbursement?
- How much is my out-of-network deductible?
- After I meet my deductible, how much can I be reimbursed for:
Initial psychiatric evaluation, 60-90min
Follow up appointments, 25min or 50min
Psychotherapy only (if you are not taking medications), 55min
What happens during the initial visit? ╲╱
The first appointment is typically 60-90 minutes. We will thoroughly discuss your current symptoms and circumstances, as well as your past medical and psychiatric history. Before the appointment, you will be emailed a link to access the electronic patient portal. This will have information about my practice policies, privacy notices, intake forms, and screening questionnaires. These must be completed at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment.
